External cladding installation involves working at height on building facades, handling large and heavy panels, and coordinating with lifting operations. Wind loading, falling objects, and manual handling injuries are common risks. Following the Grenfell Tower tragedy, fire safety of cladding materials is also a critical consideration. This talk covers the key safety controls for external cladding installation on UK construction projects.

Control Measures
- Ensure safe access is provided for all working positions using scaffolding, MEWPs, or mast climbers.
- Monitor wind speed and stop lifting cladding panels when wind exceeds safe working limits.
- Establish exclusion zones below the installation area to prevent struck-by injuries.
- Use mechanical handling aids such as vacuum lifters and panel trolleys for heavy cladding units.
- Secure all panels with temporary fixings immediately after positioning to prevent displacement.
- Verify cladding materials comply with current fire safety regulations before installation begins.
- Store cladding panels flat on level ground with protection from wind uplift and weather damage.
- Brief all operatives on the installation sequence, lifting plan, and emergency procedures.
- Inspect all edge protection and access equipment daily before work commences at height.
