Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Use

TBT-CSP-033

Self-contained breathing apparatus provides independent breathing air in toxic, oxygen-deficient, or immediately dangerous atmospheres. SCBA is used for confined space rescue, emergency response, and work in environments where filtering RPE cannot provide adequate protection. Incorrect use or poor maintenance of SCBA can be fatal. This talk covers the correct use, checks, and limitations of SCBA on construction sites.

Key Hazards
Suffocation from SCBA cylinder running empty during use in a toxic atmosphere
Face seal failure allowing contaminated air to enter the mask during use
Panic and disorientation from restricted visibility and breathing resistance
Equipment malfunction from inadequate pre-use checks or poor maintenance
Control Measures
  • Ensure only trained and competent personnel use SCBA on site — untrained use is prohibited.
  • Carry out a full pre-use check of the set including cylinder pressure, regulator, mask seal, and alarms.
  • Check the cylinder pressure gauge and calculate the available working time before entering.
  • Perform a positive and negative pressure face seal check before entering the hazardous atmosphere.
  • Monitor the cylinder pressure gauge and the low-pressure warning alarm throughout use.
  • Exit the hazardous area immediately when the low-pressure warning alarm activates.
  • Work in pairs when wearing SCBA so each user has a buddy for monitoring and emergency support.
  • Ensure SCBA sets are serviced and tested at the intervals specified by the manufacturer.
  • Store SCBA sets in clean, accessible locations with cylinders charged and ready for immediate use.
Emergency / Rescue

If your low-pressure alarm sounds, exit the hazardous atmosphere immediately using the shortest safe route. If your buddy becomes unresponsive, activate the emergency rescue procedure and call for backup before attempting any recovery.

Remember
  • Only trained and competent persons may use SCBA — untrained use is strictly prohibited
  • Check cylinder pressure and calculate available working time before every entry
  • Perform a face seal check before entering any hazardous atmosphere with SCBA
  • Exit immediately when the low-pressure warning alarm activates without delay
  • Always work in pairs when wearing SCBA so each user has buddy support available
