Battery Charging and Storage Safety
Construction sites use batteries to power a wide range of equipment from hand tools and lighting to forklifts and welfare units. Charging batteries produces hydrogen gas which is highly flammable and explosive in confined spaces. Battery acid is corrosive and can cause severe chemical burns. This talk covers the safe charging, storage, and handling of batteries on UK construction sites.
- Charge batteries only in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and combustible materials.
- Use the correct charger for the battery type and follow the manufacturer's charging instructions.
- Inspect batteries for cracks, leaks, swelling, or damaged terminals before connecting to the charger.
- Wear chemical-resistant gloves and safety glasses when handling lead-acid batteries.
- Keep a spill kit and neutralising agent near the charging area for acid spill response.
- Do not smoke, use naked flames, or create sparks within 2 metres of charging batteries.
- Disconnect the charger before connecting or disconnecting battery terminal leads.
- Store batteries upright on a stable surface and prevent them from tipping or falling.
- Ensure the charging area has a suitable fire extinguisher immediately available.
If battery acid contacts skin or eyes, flush immediately with clean water for at least 20 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing. Call 999 for severe burns. If a battery fire occurs, use a dry powder extinguisher. Evacuate if hydrogen gas is suspected.
