Wind farm cable routes carry power from individual turbines to the substation via buried HV cable circuits.

Cable drums are extremely heavy — safe lifting, transport, and drum handling procedures are essential.

Locate and mark all buried services along the cable route before excavation begins
Use trench support or battered excavations to prevent collapse on all cable trenches
Ensure only qualified HV cable engineers handle, lay, and joint high voltage cables
Use planned lifting operations for cable drum handling with certified lifting equipment
Obtain all required environmental permits and consents before starting route construction
Brief all operatives on the emergency procedure for cable damage or service strikes
Maintain separation between the cable trench and adjacent vehicle traffic with barriers
Protect watercourse crossings with silt control measures during trenching and reinstatement
Carry out cable jointing under controlled conditions with hot works permits where needed
Reinstate land drainage, field surfaces, and road crossings to the agreed specification

DON'T excavate the cable route without completing buried service detection and marking
DON'T handle or pull HV cables without proper training and HV cable engineer supervision
DON'T enter unsupported cable trenches deeper than 1.2 metres without shoring in place
DON'T allow vehicles to track along or across open cable trenches without crossing points
DON'T damage field drainage, hedgerows, or watercourse banks without agreed mitigation
DON'T store cable drums on slopes or soft ground where they could roll or sink
DON'T leave cable joints exposed to weather before protective enclosures are completed
DON'T connect or energise cables until all testing and commissioning is signed off
DON'T ignore archaeological finds during trenching — stop work and report immediately
DON'T carry out directional drilling crossings without a designed and approved method statement
