What?
- Wind farm cable routes carry power from individual turbines to the substation via buried HV cable circuits.
- Cable routes can extend several kilometres across agricultural land, roads, and watercourse crossings.
- Trenching for cable installation creates significant excavation hazards including trench collapse and service strikes.
- HV cables (typically 33kV or 66kV) must be handled, laid, and jointed by qualified HV cable engineers.
- Cable drums are extremely heavy — safe lifting, transport, and drum handling procedures are essential.
- Route crossings beneath roads, railways, and rivers often require directional drilling or thrust boring.
- Buried services along the cable route must be identified and located before any excavation begins.
- Environmental constraints including protected habitats, watercourses, and archaeological finds affect route construction.
- Cable jointing involves working in excavations with heat sources, requiring confined space and hot works controls.
- Reinstatement of agricultural land, roads, and field drainage must be completed to the required standard.
Why?
| Prevent electrocution | HV cables carry lethal voltages — incorrect handling or working near energised circuits causes fatal electrocution. |
| Excavation safety | Long trench runs across open land create collapse, service strike, and vehicle interaction hazards. |
| Environmental protection | Cable routes cross sensitive habitats and watercourses requiring strict environmental controls throughout. |
| Legal compliance | CDM 2015, Electricity at Work Regulations, and environmental permits impose duties on cable route construction. |
