Asbestos Waste Handling Procedures
Asbestos waste generated during construction, refurbishment, and demolition must be handled, packaged, and transported in strict compliance with UK regulations. Incorrect disposal of asbestos waste is a criminal offence that can result in unlimited fines and imprisonment. Even small quantities of asbestos waste require proper packaging, labelling, and disposal at a licensed facility. This talk covers the correct procedures for handling asbestos waste on site.

Control Measures

- Store bagged asbestos waste in a locked, signed compound awaiting collection by a licensed carrier.
- Complete a consignment note for every asbestos waste movement as required by the Hazardous Waste Regulations.
- Ensure the waste carrier holds a valid Environment Agency licence for transporting asbestos.
- Confirm the receiving landfill site is licensed to accept the specific type of asbestos waste.
- Keep copies of all consignment notes for a minimum of three years for audit and compliance.
- Never mix asbestos waste with general construction waste or put it in standard skips.
- Brief all operatives handling asbestos waste on the packaging, labelling, and storage requirements.
