Excavation Safety Awareness Overview
Excavation work is one of the most dangerous activities on construction sites. Trench collapses can bury workers in seconds, with the weight of soil making escape impossible without assistance. Every year, operatives are killed or seriously injured in preventable excavation incidents. Understanding the hazards and controls is essential before anyone works in or near an excavation.
- Ensure all excavations are risk assessed and planned before any digging begins on site.
- Locate and identify all underground services using service plans, CAT, and Genny equipment.
- Install suitable support systems such as trench sheets, shoring, or trench boxes before entry.
- Provide safe means of access and egress, with ladders placed within one metre of any work area.
- Inspect excavations at the start of each shift and after any event likely to affect stability.
- Keep heavy plant, materials, and spoil heaps at least one metre from excavation edges.
- Install edge protection barriers and stop blocks to prevent people and vehicles falling in.
- Provide adequate dewatering if groundwater is present and monitor water levels continuously.
- Ensure a competent person supervises all excavation work and signs off inspections daily.
If a collapse occurs, call 999 immediately. Do not enter the excavation to rescue anyone. Keep the area clear, prevent further collapse by stopping plant movement, and direct emergency services on arrival.
- One cubic metre of soil weighs over one tonne — enough to crush and suffocate you.
- Never enter an unsupported excavation regardless of how short the task will take.
- Always check for underground services before breaking ground in any location on site.
- Report any signs of cracking, bulging, or water seepage in excavation walls immediately.
- Keep all materials and vehicles well back from excavation edges at all times.
