Chapter 8 Compliant Setup and Signing
Highways & Road Works › Signing Guarding › Chapter 8 Compliant Setup and Signing
Chapter 8 of the Traffic Signs Manual is the UK standard for signing, lighting, and guarding at roadworks on public highways. Non-compliant setups put both workers and the public at serious risk. Every operative involved in setting out or maintaining traffic management must understand the basic requirements. This talk covers the key principles of a Chapter 8 compliant setup.
Key Hazards
Workers struck by vehicles entering an improperly signed work zone
Public road users failing to slow down due to inadequate advance warning
Confusion from contradictory or missing signs causing dangerous manoeuvres
Legal liability from non-compliant traffic management causing an accident
Control Measures
Set up all traffic management strictly in accordance with the approved Chapter 8 layout drawing.
Place advance warning signs at the correct distance for the road speed limit on that section.
Ensure all cones, signs, and barriers are clean, visible, and correctly positioned before works begin.
Use retroreflective signs and battery-powered lamps for all night-time or low-visibility setups.
Train all operatives who install or maintain traffic management to the NHSS 12A/B standard.
Inspect the layout at the start and end of each shift and after high winds or vehicle strikes.
Maintain a clear zone between live traffic and the working area as specified in the layout.
Never modify the approved layout without written authorisation from the traffic management designer.
Remove all signs, cones, and barriers promptly when the works are complete.
Remember
Follow the approved Chapter 8 layout drawing exactly when setting up traffic management
Advance warning signs must be placed at the correct distance for the road speed
All operatives installing traffic management must be trained to NHSS 12A/B standard
Inspect the layout at every shift change and after high winds or vehicle impacts
Never modify the approved layout without written authorisation from the designer
