Spray Painting Booth and Safety
Spray painting generates a fine mist of paint particles and solvent vapours that are both flammable and harmful to health. Without adequate ventilation and extraction, explosive atmospheres can develop rapidly in enclosed areas. Spray painting must be carried out in purpose-built booths or controlled environments with appropriate safety measures. This talk covers the key safety requirements for spray painting operations on UK construction sites.
- Carry out spray painting only in a properly ventilated spray booth or controlled outdoor area.
- Ensure the booth extraction system is operating correctly before starting any spraying.
- Use RPE with an air-supplied hood or full-face mask with organic vapour and particulate filters.
- Wear chemical-resistant coveralls, gloves, and eye protection during all spraying operations.
- Eliminate all ignition sources within the spray zone including electrical switches and static buildup.
- Ensure all electrical equipment in the spray zone is rated for use in explosive atmospheres (ATEX).
- Keep only the minimum quantity of paint and solvent needed for the current task in the work area.
- Clean spray equipment and booth filters regularly to prevent buildup of flammable residues.
- Brief operatives on the COSHH assessment for each paint product including sensitiser warnings.
If a fire starts in the spray booth, activate the fire suppression system if fitted. Evacuate the area immediately and close the booth door to contain the fire. Call 999. Do not re-enter. Use the nearest suitable extinguisher only if it is safe to do so.
