Sheet Pile Installation and Extraction
Sheet piles are interlocking steel sections driven into the ground to form retaining walls, cofferdams, and excavation support. Installation and extraction involve heavy vibrating or impact equipment, long steel sections being lifted by crane, and significant noise and vibration. This talk covers the hazards of sheet piling operations and the controls required to protect workers and neighbouring properties.
- Establish an exclusion zone around the piling rig and crane equal to the pile length plus safety margin.
- Use tag lines to control sheet pile sections during lifting, pitching, and threading into the clutch.
- Wear hearing protection rated for the noise level produced by the vibratory hammer or impact driver.
- Monitor vibration levels at adjacent structures using geophones or vibration monitoring equipment.
- Brief the team on the piling sequence, crane positions, and exclusion zone boundaries each morning.
- Ensure the piling rig operator holds a current CPCS or equivalent card for the equipment category.
- Check interlocking clutches are clean and free from debris before threading each new pile section.
- Never stand between a suspended pile and the guide frame during pitching operations.
- Record pile driving data including set, blow count, or vibration duration for every pile installed.
- Exclusion zones must equal the pile length plus safety margin around all piling operations
- Use tag lines to control sheet pile sections during lifting, pitching, and clutch threading
- Hearing protection is mandatory at the noise level produced by vibratory or impact driving equipment
- Monitor vibration at adjacent structures throughout installation using approved monitoring equipment
- Never stand between a suspended pile and the guide frame during any pitching operation
- Record pile driving data for every pile installed including set, blow count, and vibration duration
