HDPE Electrofusion Jointing Safety
Electrofusion jointing uses an electric current to heat a coil within a fitting, fusing it permanently to the HDPE pipe. The process requires clean, dry pipe surfaces, precise preparation, and strict control of the fusion parameters. Incorrect preparation or technique leads to joint failures that can cause flooding, contamination, or burst pipelines under pressure. This talk covers the safe working practices for electrofusion jointing on site.
Key Hazards
Burns from contact with hot fittings during or immediately after the fusion cycle
Joint failure under pressure due to contaminated or incorrectly prepared pipe surfaces
Electric shock from damaged fusion equipment or wet electrical connections
Pipe whip or fitting ejection if a joint fails during pressure testing
Control Measures
- Ensure only trained and competent operatives carry out electrofusion jointing on site.
- Scrape the pipe surface to the correct depth using a calibrated rotary scraper before fitting assembly.
- Clean the prepared pipe and fitting surfaces with approved wipes to remove all contamination.
- Protect the joint area from rain, wind, and dust using a jointing shelter or tent during fusion.
- Check that the electrofusion control unit is calibrated and within its service date before use.
- Scan the fitting barcode to set the correct fusion parameters automatically on the control unit.
- Do not disturb or move the joint until the full cooling time displayed on the unit has elapsed.
- Inspect completed joints visually for correct melt indicator protrusion before backfilling.
- Record all fusion parameters, joint numbers, and operator details in the jointing log for traceability.
Remember
- Only trained and competent operatives are permitted to carry out electrofusion jointing on site
- Pipe surfaces must be scraped and cleaned to remove all contamination before fitting assembly
- The jointing area must be sheltered from rain, wind, and dust throughout the entire fusion cycle
- Never move or disturb a joint until the full cooling time shown on the control unit has elapsed
- Scan the fitting barcode to set fusion parameters automatically and avoid manual input errors
- Record all fusion parameters and joint details in the jointing log for quality traceability
