Weld Inspection and NDT Safety
Weld inspection and non-destructive testing verify that welded joints meet the specified quality standards without damaging the component. Methods include visual inspection, magnetic particle inspection, ultrasonic testing, and radiographic testing. Radiographic testing using gamma or X-ray sources presents a radiation exposure hazard requiring strict exclusion zones and trained radiation protection supervisors. All NDT personnel must hold valid PCN or equivalent certification for the technique they are performing.
- Ensure all NDT technicians hold current PCN or equivalent certification for their inspection technique.
- Establish and enforce exclusion zones with physical barriers and warning lights during radiographic testing.
- Appoint a Radiation Protection Supervisor for all sites where radiographic testing takes place.
- Brief all site personnel on the radiographic testing schedule and exclusion zone locations in advance.
- Wear the PPE specified for each NDT method including gloves for chemical-based techniques.
- Store radioactive sources in approved shielded containers and maintain the source inventory log.
- Verify that visual weld inspection is completed before proceeding to more advanced NDT methods.
- Record all inspection results on the approved documentation and maintain traceability for every joint.
- Dispose of chemical testing consumables including penetrant and developer as hazardous waste.
If a radioactive source is suspected lost, stolen, or damaged, evacuate the area immediately. Establish a 50-metre exclusion zone. Call the Radiation Protection Adviser and the Environment Agency. Do not attempt to handle the source.
- Radiographic testing uses ionising radiation that is invisible and can cause cancer from exposure.
- Exclusion zones during radiographic testing are enforced with barriers and flashing warning lights.
- Only PCN-certified or equivalently qualified technicians may perform non-destructive testing.
- Visual weld inspection is the first and most important quality check and must always be completed.
- Radioactive sources must be stored in approved shielded containers and accounted for at all times.
- All NDT results must be recorded and traceable to the specific weld joint for the project quality file.
