Third Rail DC Electrification Safety
The third rail carries 750V DC traction current and is found on many UK railways including most of the Southern region network. Contact with an energised conductor rail is almost always fatal. The rail remains live at all times unless formally isolated, and it can be difficult to distinguish from running rails in poor light. This talk explains the dangers of the third rail system and the rules every worker must follow.
- Never step on, touch, or place anything on the conductor rail unless it is confirmed isolated.
- Maintain a minimum clearance of one metre from the conductor rail at all times when it is live.
- Attend the safety briefing to confirm whether the conductor rail is live or isolated for the work.
- Use short-circuit straps at the locations specified by the electrical control officer after isolation.
- Wear insulated safety footwear with a minimum sole thickness as specified by the railway operator.
- Treat all conductor rails as live unless you have personally been told otherwise in the safety briefing.
- Keep all tools, materials, and equipment away from the conductor rail to prevent bridging the gap.
- Ensure adequate lighting is provided when working near the conductor rail during darkness or poor visibility.
- Report any damaged rail covers, gap protectors, or warning signs to the person in charge immediately.
If someone receives an electric shock from the conductor rail, do not touch them until the supply is confirmed isolated. Call 999 immediately and request both ambulance and railway emergency services. Begin CPR once it is safe.
- The conductor rail carries 750V DC and contact is almost always fatal to anyone
- Maintain at least one metre clearance from the conductor rail whenever it is energised
- Treat all conductor rails as live unless you have been told otherwise in the safety briefing
- Short-circuit straps must be applied at specified locations after formal isolation is confirmed
- Keep all tools and materials well clear of the conductor rail to prevent accidental bridging
