Setting Out Near Open Excavations
Surveyors regularly work near open excavations to set out structures, check levels, and mark positions. The focus on precise measurements can distract from the immediate danger of falling into an unprotected trench or open pit. This talk covers the specific risks surveyors face near excavations and the precautions that must be taken every time setting-out work is carried out close to an open dig.

Control Measures
- Maintain a safe distance from excavation edges as defined in the site excavation risk assessment.
- Use ranging poles, extendable staffs, or remote prism systems to take readings without entering the trench.
- Wear high-visibility clothing to ensure excavator operators and banksmen can see you at all times.
- Confirm with the excavation supervisor that work has paused before approaching the dig for measurements.
- Never enter an unsupported excavation to set up equipment or take readings at the base.
- Position tripods and total stations on firm ground well back from the excavation edge.
- Ensure edge protection is in place before working near any open excavation on site.
- Communicate your planned work location to the site foreman before starting setting out near plant.
- Carry a two-way radio to maintain contact with the machine operator during work near active excavations.
