Temporary Bridge and Platform Structures
Temporary bridges and platform structures provide access across rivers, excavations, railways, and other obstacles during construction. These structures must be designed, checked, and approved through the temporary works process before they can be loaded with plant, vehicles, or pedestrians. Failure of a temporary bridge can cause vehicles to plunge into voids below. This talk covers the safety requirements for temporary access structures.
Key Hazards
Structural collapse from overloading beyond the designed safe capacity
Vehicles driving off the edge of temporary bridges without adequate barriers
Foundation failure from inadequate bearing capacity at support positions
Pedestrians falling through gaps or over edges where guardrails are missing
Control Measures
- Ensure the temporary bridge or platform is designed by a competent engineer and formally checked.
- Register the structure on the temporary works register with the design, check, and approval records.
- Display the maximum load capacity and any vehicle weight restrictions clearly at each approach.
- Install vehicle barriers, wheel guides, and pedestrian guardrails as specified in the design.
- Inspect foundations and bearings before first use and at regular intervals throughout the works.
- Do not allow loads exceeding the design capacity to cross without written engineer approval.
- Ensure the approaches are level, well-drained, and maintained to prevent vehicle instability.
- Brief all site operatives and delivery drivers on the weight restrictions and crossing procedures.
- Obtain a formal permit to dismantle before removing the structure at the end of its use.
