Lane Closure and Contraflow Setup
Lane closures and contraflow arrangements redirect traffic around construction works on dual carriageways and motorways. These are high-risk operations carried out at speed, often at night, with vehicles passing at close quarters. Incorrect taper lengths, missing signs, or poor cone spacing can result in vehicle incursions into the work zone. This talk covers the key safety requirements for lane closure and contraflow setup on UK highways.

Control Measures
- Install the lane closure strictly in accordance with the approved Chapter 8 layout drawing.
- Calculate taper lengths based on the road speed limit and ensure correct cone spacing throughout.
- Deploy advance warning signs at the correct distances before the taper begins.
- Use an impact protection vehicle at the head of the taper during installation and removal.
- Install contraflow barriers or cones to physically separate opposing traffic streams.
- Brief all operatives on the installation sequence, escape routes, and emergency procedures.
- Wear Class 3 high-visibility clothing with retroreflective strips at all times.
- Install and remove the closure working with traffic, never against the flow.
- Inspect the layout immediately after installation and at regular intervals throughout the works.
