Site Security and Access Control
Good site security protects construction workers, the public, and valuable materials and equipment. Unauthorised access to a construction site exposes trespassers to serious hazards including open excavations, moving plant, and falls from height. Effective access control also prevents theft, vandalism, and interference with safety-critical systems. This talk explains the site security measures and every operative's role in maintaining them.
Key Hazards
Trespassers injured or killed by site hazards including excavations and plant

Vandalism of safety-critical systems such as scaffolding or temporary works
Children gaining access to site and being exposed to life-threatening hazards
Control Measures
- Maintain secure perimeter hoarding or fencing around the entire construction site at all times.
- Ensure all access gates are locked when unattended and at the end of every working day.
- Control entry through a single point with a gatehouse or turnstile recording all arrivals and departures.
- Issue access passes or cards to all authorised personnel and check them at the gate.
- Challenge any person on site who is not wearing visible identification or the correct PPE.
- Secure ladders, scaffolds, and access routes that could allow unauthorised climbing out of hours.
- Store valuable materials, tools, and fuel in locked containers within the secure compound.
- Report any signs of trespassing, damage, or interference to the site manager immediately.
- Ensure adequate security lighting is provided around the perimeter and at access points.
Remember
- Maintain secure hoarding or fencing around the entire site perimeter at all times
- Lock all access gates when unattended and at the end of every working day without exception
- Control entry through a single access point recording all arrivals and departures on site
- Challenge any person on site not wearing visible identification or the correct site PPE

- Report any signs of trespassing, damage, or interference to the site manager immediately
