Description
The Carbon Calculator is a macro-enabled Excel workbook (.xlsm) providing a structured whole-life carbon assessment for civil engineering and construction projects, compliant with BS EN 15978. It covers embodied carbon modules A1–A3 (raw materials and manufacturing), A4 (transport to site) and A5 (construction and installation), plus operational carbon modules B1–B7 (use, maintenance, repair, replacement, refurbishment, operational energy and operational water) across the asset's configurable design life.
The material inputs sheet lets you log quantities by construction phase, selecting materials from a pre-loaded ICE Database v3.0 library with carbon factors that auto-populate per material. The transport emissions schedule uses default UK average distances by transport mode (HGV rigid, HGV artic, light van, rail, coastal/inland ship) with BEIS 2023 conversion factors, and allows distance overrides where actual haul data is available. The plant and equipment sheet records on-site fuel consumption by equipment type and hours used, calculating Module A5 emissions.
A design comparison sheet lets you evaluate two design options side by side on embodied carbon, identifying the lower-carbon alternative during design development. Industry benchmarks for roads, bridges, water treatment, commercial, residential and other asset types are provided as reference. The dashboard summarises total project carbon (tCO₂e) with breakdowns by lifecycle module and construction phase, presented as headline KPI tiles and a detailed table.
