Civil Engineering Materials Converter

The Civil Engineering Materials Converter is an Excel-based multi-unit conversion and take-off tool covering over 100 civil engineering materials commonly used on UK construction sites. It converts between tonnes, cubic metres, kilograms, litres, square metres, bulk bags and wagon loads using both loose and compacted bulk densities, so you can move seamlessly between design quantities, order quantities and delivery units.

Each material entry includes built-in ICE v3 embodied carbon factors (kgCO₂e per tonne), enabling automatic carbon calculations alongside volume and weight conversions. An optional cost estimation column lets you apply £/tonne rates to generate budget-level cost figures for each material line. Category roll-ups summarise totals across aggregates, soils, concrete, asphalt and other material groups.

The tool is designed for site engineers, quantity surveyors and materials managers who need fast, accurate conversions for take-offs, orders, waste calculations and carbon reporting.
