Temporary Access Safety Awareness Overview
Temporary access structures provide safe routes for workers to reach their place of work and include temporary staircases, access platforms, ramps, walkways, and crossings. These structures must be properly designed, installed, and maintained to support the loads placed upon them. Poorly constructed or inadequately maintained temporary access is a significant cause of falls and injuries on construction sites. Every worker should check that access structures are safe before using them.
- Ensure all temporary access structures are designed by a competent person for the intended loading.
- Install guardrails, mid-rails, and toe boards on all temporary platforms and walkways above ground level.
- Inspect temporary access structures before first use and at regular intervals during the works.
- Maintain walking surfaces in a clean, level condition free from mud, ice, and debris.
- Ensure ramp gradients do not exceed the safe maximum and provide handrails on both sides.
- Secure all temporary staircase sections to prevent movement and ensure treads are uniform.
- Light all temporary access routes adequately, especially stairwells and covered walkways.
- Remove and replace any damaged boards, handrails, or structural members before the route is used.
- Brief workers on the designated access routes and prohibit the use of informal shortcuts.
- Temporary access structures must be designed and checked by a competent person before use.
- Guardrails, mid-rails, and toe boards are required on all platforms and walkways above ground level.
- Check the condition of temporary access every time you use it and report any defects immediately.
- Wet, muddy, or icy walking surfaces are a serious slip hazard and must be treated before use.
- Never use informal shortcuts such as climbing formwork or steelwork to reach your work position.
- Temporary access is covered by the Work at Height Regulations and must meet the same standards.
