Demolition Method Statement Requirements
Every demolition project requires a written method statement that sets out exactly how the structure will be taken down safely. The method statement must address structural stability at every stage, the sequence of removal, hazardous materials, exclusion zones, and emergency procedures. No demolition work may begin until the method statement has been reviewed and approved. This talk explains what the method statement must contain and why every operative needs to understand it.

Control Measures
- Ensure a project-specific demolition method statement is written and approved before work starts.
- Confirm a refurbishment and demolition asbestos survey has been completed and results are available.
- Follow the demolition sequence exactly as described in the method statement at all times.
- Brief all operatives on the method statement content including sequence, hazards, and exclusion zones.
- Establish and maintain exclusion zones at the distances specified in the method statement.
- Monitor structural stability throughout the demolition using the methods defined in the method statement.
- Ensure a competent person reviews the method statement if site conditions change unexpectedly.
- Record any deviations from the planned sequence and obtain approval before continuing work.
- Keep a copy of the method statement available on site for reference throughout the demolition works.
