Water Suppression for Dust Control
Water suppression is one of the most effective methods for controlling construction dust at source. Adding water during cutting, drilling, grinding, and demolition activities prevents fine particles from becoming airborne and entering workers' breathing zones. This talk explains when water suppression should be used, the equipment available, and the practical steps to make it work effectively on site every day.
Key Hazards
Silicosis from inhaling respirable crystalline silica dust generated during dry cutting
Occupational asthma from repeated exposure to airborne construction dust
Dust clouds reducing visibility and creating slip hazards on wet surfaces
Water supply running out mid-task leaving the operation uncontrolled
Control Measures
- Use integrated water suppression systems on all disc cutters, wall chasers, and core drills.
- Ensure an adequate water supply is connected and flowing before starting any cutting operation.
- Attach a water suppression ring or nozzle to hand-held tools where integrated systems are unavailable.
- Apply water spray to demolition activities including crushing, screening, and material handling.
- Check that the water flow rate is sufficient to control visible dust at the point of generation.
- Refill water tanks and bottles before they run empty to maintain continuous suppression during work.
- Combine water suppression with on-tool extraction for maximum dust control during indoor cutting.
- Manage water runoff to prevent slip hazards and avoid contaminating drainage systems nearby.
- Monitor the effectiveness of water suppression and increase flow if visible dust escapes the work area.
