What?
- Distribution boards divide the incoming electrical supply into individual circuits protected by circuit breakers or fuses.
- Incorrect installation of distribution boards causes electrical fires, shock hazards, and nuisance tripping affecting building services.
- Installation must comply with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) and be carried out by qualified, competent electricians.
- Circuit identification and labelling must be accurate — mislabelled circuits prevent correct isolation during maintenance and emergencies.
- Cable termination quality directly affects safety — loose connections generate heat, arc, and eventually cause fire.
- Adequate cable entry space and bending radii must be maintained to prevent cable damage during installation.
- Isolation of the incoming supply must be confirmed dead before working inside any energised distribution board.
- Arc flash risk exists when working on or near energised distribution boards — appropriate PPE must be worn.
- Testing and verification of the completed installation must confirm correct polarity, insulation resistance, and earth continuity.
- IP ratings for distribution board enclosures must match the environment — boards in wet or dusty locations need higher ratings.
Why?
| Fire from loose connections | A loose cable termination in a distribution board generates heat that ignites surrounding materials — precision termination prevents fire. |
| Mislabelled circuits | A mislabelled circuit breaker causes an electrician to isolate the wrong circuit — they work on a live circuit believing it is dead. |
| Arc flash | Distribution boards contain concentrated electrical energy — a fault during work produces arc flash temperatures exceeding 19,000°C. |
