EV Charging Point Installation Safety
EV charging point installation within buildings involves running heavy-duty electrical cables, mounting charger units on walls or posts, and connecting to the building's electrical distribution system. This work often takes place in occupied car parks where public vehicles and pedestrians are present. Electricians must manage the dual risks of electrical work and working in public access areas. Control Measures
- Isolate and lock off the relevant distribution board before starting any electrical work.
- Establish a safe working zone in the car park using barriers, signage, and traffic cones.
- Route cables in protected trunking or conduit to prevent vehicle damage and trip hazards.
- Use mechanical aids to lift and position heavy charger units and cable drums safely.
- Ensure all electrical installation work is carried out by qualified electricians to BS 7671.
- Test and commission each charger fully before removing barriers and opening to public use.
- Verify earthing, bonding, and RCD protection meet the design specification before energising.
- Brief building occupants or site users on the temporary work zone and alternative parking.
- Coordinate with the building management to schedule work during low-occupancy periods.
