The rapid growth of electric vehicle infrastructure means construction teams are increasingly installing EV charging stations in car parks, forecourts, and highway service areas. These projects involve significant electrical work, cable trenching, and working in areas open to public traffic. This talk covers the key safety considerations for EV charging station construction on UK sites.

Control Measures
- Isolate and lock off all electrical supplies before starting connection work on charger units.
- Establish a safe working zone with barriers and signage in public car parks and forecourts.
- Complete a cable avoidance survey using CAT and Genny before excavating any cable trenches.
- Use mechanical lifting aids for heavy charger pedestals, feeder pillars, and transformer units.
- Ensure all electrical work is carried out by competent electricians to BS 7671 standards.
- Brief operatives on the traffic management arrangements for working in public access areas.
- Test and commission all charger installations before removing barriers and opening to public use.
- Verify earthing and bonding arrangements comply with the design specification before energising.
- Coordinate with the distribution network operator for any new or upgraded supply connections.
