Protected Species Awareness on Site
UK wildlife law protects many species that are commonly found on construction sites including bats, great crested newts, badgers, nesting birds, reptiles, and water voles. Disturbing or harming these species or their habitats is a criminal offence carrying unlimited fines and up to six months in prison. Construction workers must be aware of the protected species that may be present, know the legal restrictions, and understand what to do if they encounter wildlife during their work.
- Attend the ecological briefing during site induction covering protected species present on the project.
- Follow all ecological mitigation measures described in the environmental management plan.
- Stop work immediately if you discover a bat, nesting bird, newt, or other protected species.
- Report any wildlife sighting or suspected habitat to the ecological clerk of works or site manager.
- Observe seasonal restrictions on vegetation clearance during bird nesting season (March to August).
- Do not disturb badger setts, bat roosts, or water vole burrows even if they appear unoccupied.
- Check for nesting birds before removing vegetation, demolishing buildings, or clearing sites.
- Follow exclusion zone requirements around identified habitats as marked on the site plan.
- Attend refresher briefings when new ecological surveys identify additional protected areas.
- Disturbing protected species is a criminal offence with unlimited fines and potential imprisonment.
- Bats and their roosts are protected year-round — even empty roosts must not be disturbed.
- Bird nesting season runs from March to August and vegetation clearance requires checks before starting.
- If you find any wildlife during work, stop immediately and report it before continuing.
- Great crested newts, badgers, and water voles all have specific legal protections on construction sites.
- Following the ecological mitigation plan is not optional — it is a legal and contractual requirement.
