Hot Works Fire Watch Requirements
A fire watch is a dedicated period of observation after hot works have finished, during which a trained person monitors the work area for signs of smouldering or fire. Most hot works fires start after the operator has left the area, when embers or hot fragments ignite nearby materials. This talk explains fire watch duties, the minimum duration required, and who is responsible for maintaining the watch.

Control Measures
- Assign a named fire watch person before hot works begin and record their name on the permit.
- Maintain the fire watch for a minimum of 60 minutes after the completion of all hot works activity.
- Ensure the fire watch person remains in the work area with a clear view of the hot works location.
- Provide the fire watch person with a suitable fire extinguisher immediately accessible at the watch point.
- Check above, below, and behind the work area for signs of smouldering, smoke, or heat during the watch.
- Extend the fire watch duration if combustible materials, cavities, or voids are present near the work.
- Ensure the fire watch person is trained to use a fire extinguisher and knows the fire alarm location.
- Do not end the fire watch until the area has been thoroughly checked and confirmed cold to the touch.
- Record the fire watch start time, end time, and outcome on the hot works permit before closing it.
Remember
- A named fire watch person must be assigned and recorded on the hot works permit
- The fire watch must continue for at least 60 minutes after all hot works activity stops
- The fire watch person must have a fire extinguisher and clear view of the work area
- Check above, below, and behind the work area for smouldering during the entire watch
- Do not end the fire watch until the area is confirmed cold to the touch throughout
- Record the fire watch start time, end time, and outcome on the hot works permit
