CFA (Continuous Flight Auger) Pile Safety
CFA piling involves drilling a continuous flight auger into the ground to the design depth, then injecting concrete through the hollow stem as the auger is withdrawn. The process generates high noise levels, vibration, and significant volumes of spoil that must be managed safely. The piling rig is large and powerful with extensive exclusion zone requirements. Contact with the rotating auger is instantly fatal. Concrete supply, spoil removal, and reinforcement cage installation must all be coordinated safely around the rig.

Workers struck by the rig or spoil removal plant operating in the congested work area
Noise and vibration exposure exceeding daily action values during continuous piling operations
Control Measures
- Maintain a strict exclusion zone around the piling rig during all auger rotation and extraction.
- Never approach the rotating auger for any reason — all clearance work must wait until rotation stops.
- Ensure the concrete pump operator and rig operator have clear communication during concrete injection.
- Coordinate spoil removal vehicles to operate safely around the rig without entering the exclusion zone.
- Provide hearing protection for all workers within the noise hazard zone during CFA operations.
- Monitor vibration levels at nearby structures and ensure they remain within permitted limits.
- Install reinforcement cages only after the auger has been fully withdrawn and the rig is stationary.
- Brief all personnel on the piling sequence, exclusion zones, and their specific roles each day.
- Inspect the rig, auger, and concrete delivery system at the start of every shift before operations.

- The rotating CFA auger is immediately fatal on contact — the exclusion zone must never be breached.
- Concrete is injected under high pressure through the auger stem as it withdraws from the ground.
- Spoil volumes from CFA piling are significant and must be removed safely without congesting the work area.
