Nail Gun and Cartridge Fixing Tool Safety
Nail guns and cartridge-actuated fixing tools fire fasteners at high velocity into timber, concrete, and steel. They can penetrate the human body with lethal force. Accidental discharge, ricochet, and blow-through are the most common causes of nail gun injuries on UK sites. This talk covers the safe use of these tools and the controls that prevent serious injury.

Blow-through penetration where fixings pass completely through thin materials
Hearing damage from repeated high-impulse noise during sustained fixing work
Control Measures
- Ensure only trained and competent operatives use nail guns and cartridge fixing tools on site.
- Check the tool before each use for damage, correct operation of the safety nose contact, and trigger lock.
- Never point a nail gun at any person, even when you believe it is unloaded or disconnected.
- Keep your free hand well clear of the line of fire and fixing point during every shot.
- Check behind the material being fixed to confirm no one is on the other side before firing.
- Use the correct fastener type and cartridge strength for the material and thickness being fixed into.
- Wear safety glasses and hearing protection during all nail gun and cartridge tool operations.
- Disconnect the air supply or remove the cartridge strip before clearing jams or carrying the tool.
- Store nail guns and cartridge strips securely when not in use to prevent unauthorised access.
