Mobile Tower Scaffold Erection and Use
Mobile tower scaffolds provide a stable working platform for short-duration tasks at height. They must be erected by trained personnel following the manufacturer's instruction manual using either the 3T method (through the trap) or advance guardrail system. Incorrect assembly, use on uneven ground, overloading, and moving the tower with workers on the platform are all common causes of tower collapse and falls. Only PASMA-trained personnel should erect, alter, or dismantle mobile towers on construction sites.

Tower collapse from incorrect assembly or use on uneven ground surfaces
Falls from the platform when climbing externally instead of using internal access
Overturn from moving the tower with persons or unsecured materials on the platform
Overloading the platform beyond the safe working load causing structural failure
Control Measures
- Ensure all tower erectors hold a current PASMA certificate for the tower type being assembled.
- Erect the tower following the manufacturer's instruction manual and the specified build method.
- Set up on firm, level ground with all castors locked and adjustable legs levelled correctly.
- Use the 3T (through the trap) or advance guardrail method to maintain fall protection during erection.
- Never climb the outside of the tower — always use the internal ladder and access hatch.
- Lock all four castors before anyone steps onto the working platform at any height.
- Do not move the tower with any person on the platform or with unsecured tools and materials.
- Check the maximum platform height for outdoor use and reduce in windy conditions as required.
- Inspect the tower before every use and after any event that may have affected its stability.
Remember
- Only PASMA-trained personnel should erect, alter, or dismantle mobile tower scaffolds.
- Always climb inside the tower using the internal ladder — external climbing causes overturns.
- All four castors must be locked before anyone steps onto the platform at any height.
- Never move a tower with anyone on the platform or with loose materials that could fall.
- The build method must maintain fall protection throughout erection using 3T or advance guardrails.
- Outdoor tower height must be reduced in wind and the manufacturer's limits strictly followed.
