Temporary Works Class Matrix

The Temporary Works Class Matrix is an Excel-based classification and design check reference tool aligned with BS 5975:2024, the code of practice for temporary works procedures. The Risk Class matrix assigns Class 0 to Class 3 ratings across a range of temporary works types including formwork, falsework, back propping, façade retention, reinforcement cages, hoarding, temporary barriers, excavation support and crane bases, based on the consequence of failure and complexity of the works.

The Design Check Category matrix defines Cat 0 to Cat 3 requirements covering checker independence levels, documentation standards and escalation triggers — specifying when a self-check is sufficient, when an independent check within the same organisation is needed, and when an external third-party check is required. A risk-to-category mapping sheet cross-references risk class against design check category to determine the appropriate checking regime for any given item.

A blank Temporary Works Register template is included for recording each TW item with its risk class, design check category, designer, checker, permit status and inspection requirements. The template is designed for temporary works coordinators (TWCs), designers and project engineers who need a quick-reference classification tool and register framework for BS 5975 compliance.
