Uncharted Services Log

The Uncharted Services Log is an Excel-based tracker for recording and managing encounters with uncharted underground services during excavation works on construction sites. Each discovery is logged with date, service type (HV cables, ductile iron, cast iron, PE pipe, LV cables, gas, comms, concrete pipe and others), size range, depth below ground, location reference, estimated cost impact, duration of delay and resolution status.

Monthly and service type summary tables aggregate discoveries over time, showing how frequently uncharted services are being encountered and which types are most common. The totals dashboard presents completed resolution percentage, total issue counts, cumulative cost impact and average delay duration, giving project managers and commercial teams the data needed for risk reporting and variation substantiation.

Breakdowns by service type show average depth, most common resolution status and frequency of occurrence for each utility type. The log is designed for site engineers, utility coordinators and commercial teams on civil engineering projects involving significant excavation works, particularly on brownfield sites where existing service records may be incomplete or unreliable.
