Description
The Uncharted Services Log is a specialist Excel template for recording, managing, and reporting the discovery of uncharted, unmapped, or incorrectly located underground services encountered during excavation works on construction and civil engineering projects. Striking an unknown utility is one of the most dangerous events that can occur on a construction site £ gas mains, live electrical cables, fibre optic networks, and pressurised water pipes all pose serious risks to life, and the financial and programme consequences of a utility strike can be catastrophic. This log provides a structured system for documenting every encounter with an uncharted service so that the information is captured accurately, communicated promptly, and available for future reference.
Each discovery record captures the date and time of discovery, exact location (grid reference, chainage, or drawing markup reference), depth below ground level, service type (gas, electric, water, telecoms, drainage, unknown), approximate size and material, condition, and whether the service was live or abandoned. The notification tracking module records who was informed of the discovery £ site manager, client, utility owner, HSE advisor £ with timestamps and confirmation of receipt, ensuring that the duty to notify is discharged and evidenced. Safe-dig compliance fields confirm that appropriate safe digging practices were followed at the point of discovery, including hand-digging zones, CAT and Genny readings, and permit-to-dig references.
Photo evidence management links each discovery to numbered site photographs showing the exposed service, its position relative to the excavation, and any identification markings. A location plan cross-reference field connects each record to the relevant drawing revision so that as-built records can be updated with the newly discovered service routing. The dashboard provides a project-wide overview of all uncharted service discoveries, plotted by location zone and service type, enabling the project team to identify areas of the site where utility records are unreliable and additional precautions should be applied to future excavations. Printable discovery reports are formatted for submission to utility owners, the client, and regulatory bodies as required.
