MEWP Exclusion Zone Management
Mobile elevating work platforms create significant crush and struck-by risks at ground level. The area beneath and around an operating MEWP must be controlled to prevent pedestrians from entering the danger zone. Failure to maintain exclusion zones has resulted in fatal crush injuries on UK construction sites. This talk covers the requirements for setting up and maintaining exclusion zones around MEWPs.
- Establish a physical exclusion zone around the MEWP using barriers, cones, and warning tape.
- Size the exclusion zone to cover the full swing radius and any potential falling object area.
- Appoint a ground-level banksman to prevent unauthorised entry into the exclusion zone.
- Ensure the MEWP operator checks the area is clear before lowering, slewing, or driving.
- Use tool lanyards and secured containers to prevent objects falling from the basket.
- Brief all site operatives on the exclusion zone location and restrictions before work begins.
- Reposition the exclusion zone barriers each time the MEWP moves to a new location.
- Do not allow any person to stand or walk beneath the elevated platform at any time.
- Review the exclusion zone arrangement if site conditions change or other works encroach.
- A physical exclusion zone must surround every operating MEWP at all times
- No person may stand or walk beneath the elevated platform under any circumstances
- Appoint a banksman to control access and prevent people entering the danger zone
- Reposition barriers every time the MEWP moves to a new working location
- Use tool lanyards and containers to prevent objects falling from the basket
