MEWP Operation on Slopes and Uneven Ground
Operating mobile elevating work platforms on slopes and uneven ground significantly increases the risk of overturning. MEWPs are designed for use on firm, level surfaces and their stability margins reduce rapidly as the ground gradient increases. This talk explains the limitations, the checks required before operating on sloped or uneven ground, and when to choose alternative access methods instead.
- Check the manufacturer's manual for the maximum permitted operating gradient before positioning.
- Assess the ground conditions for firmness, level, and the presence of voids or buried services.
- Use outrigger pads or spreader plates on soft ground to distribute the machine's weight safely.
- Measure the actual slope gradient using an inclinometer or spirit level before operating on any slope.
- Do not extend the boom or raise the platform if the gradient exceeds the machine's rated limit.
- Position the MEWP with the heaviest end facing uphill where the manufacturer's guidance permits.
- Ensure the ground has been prepared and compacted if it is too soft for the machine's ground bearing.
- Choose an alternative access method such as scaffolding if the slope makes MEWP use unsafe.
- Brief the operator on the specific ground conditions and gradient limits before each positioning.
