MEWP Use Near Overhead Power Lines
Using a MEWP near overhead power lines is one of the most dangerous activities on a construction site. Contact between the platform, boom, or any tool with a power line causes instant electrocution and is almost always fatal. Electricity can also arc across air gaps at high voltages without direct contact. This talk covers the critical controls for MEWP operations near overhead lines.
- Identify all overhead power lines in the work area and mark their positions clearly.
- Maintain the minimum safe clearance distance specified by the distribution network operator.
- Erect goal posts or physical barriers to restrict MEWP reach within the safe zone.
- Set electronic height and reach limiters on the MEWP where the machine is equipped with them.
- Brief the operator on the exact location of all overhead lines and the safe working envelope.
- Appoint a dedicated observer to monitor the MEWP position relative to the power line.
- Request the DNO to isolate, divert, or insulate the power line where clearances cannot be maintained.
- Do not operate the MEWP if you are unsure whether the safe clearance distance can be maintained.
- Display warning signs indicating the presence of overhead power lines at the MEWP work area.
If the MEWP contacts an overhead power line, stay on the platform and do not touch the ground or any metal structure. Warn everyone to stay clear. Call 999 and the DNO. Only leave the platform by jumping clear with both feet together if there is fire risk.
- Identify all overhead power lines and maintain the minimum safe clearance distance at all times
- Erect goal posts or barriers to physically restrict the MEWP from reaching the danger zone
- Appoint a dedicated observer to monitor the boom position relative to the overhead line
- Request the DNO to isolate or divert the line if safe clearance cannot be guaranteed
- Never operate the MEWP if you are unsure about maintaining the safe clearance distance
